Divemaster salary in 2026, how much divemasters earn around the world
Short answer. In 2026 a divemaster earns anywhere from a few hundred dollars a month on commission in Southeast Asia to 4,000–4,500 $ a month on a superyacht. In Spain and the Canary Islands a full-time contract cannot pay less than the legal minimum of 1,221 € a month in 14 payments. In the USA divemasters start at about 20 $ an hour and reach 45,000–55,000 $ a year with tips. Below are current figures by country, what the pay is made of and how to earn more.
Divemaster salary by country in 2026
All figures come from vacancies, employer pages and official wage rules published or valid in 2025–2026. Where a market does not publish divemaster pay, we say so.
| Where | Typical pay | What else you get |

| USA (Hawaii, Florida) | About 20–24 $ an hour to start; 45,000–55,000 $ a year with tips in Kona; around 48,000 $ a year in Florida | Tips shared among the crew |

| Indonesia | 10–12 million rupiah a month for a 2026 divemaster-instructor and project role | Housing and transport allowances |
| United Kingdom | Aquarium and dive centre roles often pay the legal minimum of 12.71 £ an hour | Mostly part-time |

What a divemaster's income is made of
The base pay is only part of it. Depending on the country, a divemaster earns from:
- a monthly salary or an hourly rate — the rule in Spain, the USA, Australia and on yachts;
- commission per diver or per tank — common in Thailand, about 20% of the dive price;
- commission on sales — course upgrades, equipment, insurance and photos, usually 5–25%;
- tips — in the USA and the Caribbean they can raise pay significantly and are usually shared among the crew;
- a service charge — in Maldivian resorts it is paid on top of the basic salary every month;
- free housing, meals and flights — common on liveaboards, yachts and in the Maldives, and worth comparing when you look at the numbers.
Divemaster salary in Tenerife
A divemaster in Tenerife earns from the Spanish legal minimum of 1,221 € a month in 14 payments, which is about 1,425 € a month spread over 12, and a little above. On top of that come commission on course upgrades, equipment and insurance sales, and paid extra hours.
Living costs in the south of the island: a room costs about 350–400 € a month, an apartment 600–700 € a month. Diving in Tenerife runs all year round, so a divemaster can work the whole year rather than one season.
How to earn more as a divemaster
- Become an instructor. In North America, Europe and Australia instructors earn about 2,000–3,000 $ a month, and they are paid for every course and student.
- Speak more languages. Every extra language means more groups you can lead and more courses you can sell.
- Add specialties. Nitrox, Deep and Wreck let you lead more dives and teach more after you become an instructor.
- Look at yachts and liveaboards. Pay is higher and housing and food are included, but you live on board for months.
