I’ve finished my divemaster training. What’s next?
Congratulations! Now you are a PADI professional and can start your adventurous career in scuba diving. It opens you so many opportunities to travel, meet new people and keep growing personally. As a divemaster you are allowed to work in any dive center of the world, you can guide groups of certified divers, do trial dives and assist on courses.
What are the requirements to be employed?
Remember that to be permitted to work you need to keep your divemaster status active in the diving federation. Keep an eye on annual renewal not to miss the moment to pay the fee. Additionally, you always need to have professional diving insurance that is different from the one that you used to have before reaching the divemaster license. Now you are ready to work. For many dive centers in touristic destinations it’s important that you speak different languages. So if you do, it will be certainly a great advantage for you.
Motivated by your passion for diving, you might want to travel around the world discovering for yourself more and more stunning dive destinations. You might also look into working aboard on ships that offer packages of live-a-board and diving.
What is the next step in your career?
To grow as a professional diver you need to take further educational courses. The next level above Divemaster is Assistant Instructor and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). To get qualified, you need to enrol on an IDC course (Instructor Development Course) that takes place several times a year in Tenerife. We recommend to get directly the OWSI license, as Assistant Instructor is just an intermediate and optional step toward the Instructor license.
On the IDC course, candidates develop their teaching skills under the guidance of experienced PADI Course Directors. They learn effective teaching techniques, classroom and confined water presentation skills, and how to conduct open water training. After successful completion of the Instructor Examination, participants get licensed as OWSI and can start teaching courses up to Divemaster.
Overall, being a Divemaster offers a blend of personal fulfillment, a sense of responsibility, opportunities for continued learning, and the chance to share your passion for the underwater world with others.
